Chance Encounter...
Today while driving to lunch took a short cut through the small town of Shirlington. Pulled off the interstate and on to the off ramp, slowed and came to a stop at a red light. While waiting at the red light was watching folks walking and jogging on the trail off to the right side of the road.
Just to the right of that fitness trail is a stream or creek as we would call it in Texas. This particular creek has several large dog parks located adjacent to it ...and the dogs like to run down the embankment from the dog park to the water and play in the water. The dogs were not in site since their play park was several blocks up the road from where stopped at the red light.
When the light turned green I headed up the road at the fantastic speed of 25 mile per hour, which is the speed on this section of road due to the heavy pet and people traffic in the area. As I was moving up the road towards the place I was going to eat lunch at, was distracted by all the walkers, bikers, runners, and such who were out and about at noon.
While distracted a very large gray object came floating across in front of my wind shield from my left side and almost hit or grazed the wind shield of the car, instinctively slowed and that slowing allowed the large gray object to float across in front of my wind shield just grazing or almost grazing the wind shield as it floated off to my right over the trail and into the creek.
The sudden appearance of the gray object startled me for a moment but managed to miss the floating gray object and keep from hitting the object or anything else. As I continued up the road I noticed the large gray object that almost hit my wind shield was a very large gray heron, better known as a big blue heron. The heron apparently misjudged his landing altitude and distance to the creek and that almost cost him as he floated across the front of my wind shield.
Wanted to make sure the gray heron was ok so pulled over to the side of the road and got out and walked back to the creek area where the large gray heron apparently landed. Walked over to the creek and could see the gray heron standing on a large rock in the middle of the creek and the heron did not appear to be injured.
Got closer an saw the heron had forgotten all about my wind shield and our close encounter and was now busy looking for his own lunch. Took several pictures of the big blue or gray heron perched on his rock in the middle of the creek and then headed to my own lunch.
While walking away could have sworn the heroin was smiling and standing on piece of my old walking hat previously lost at the pond…smiling
