Remember those lazy hazy days of summer when you were excited school was out and there was so much to do? My memories of summer were similar but after two weeks... of those lazy hazy days of summer I would be telling my parents there was nothing to do. On the third weekend of the summer of 196? my family took a trip to Millersview, Texas.
The trip from Waco, Texas down the back roads through long lost and forgotten towns was fun and exciting. We were going to see my Aunt Ruth Brawn and her family who had moved to the out of sight, out of mind town of Millersview. My Mothers Aunt Leitha and Uncle Frank also lived in Millersview, we had visited them several times, now it was exciting to visit Aunt Ruthie.
Aunt Ruthie had three, yep three daughters who were fun and exciting kids. Aunt Ruthie as I called her had kept my sister and I after school for a year or so when she lived in Waco so I was aware of how these three kids carried on.
Unfortunately my memory fades on if the cousins were there, do not remember them being there, made for a very slow summer after the first couple of days ended. We were going to be there two weeks and I was bored after two days, who knew getting out in the country would be boring. Lot’s of my Aunts and Uncles lived in the area back then for who knows why.
Walked the entire town of Millersview in an hour, walked the school grounds, no kids anywhere, it was summer after all.
We all went out to see Uncle Arthur who lived on a ranch outside of Millersview, it was bleak looking, the adults gathered to talk about old times, while I just sat around till Uncle Arthur came over and handed me a Daisy BB gun and said go out behind the barn and shoot as many scissor tale birds as you can, they are too many of them.
I was out the door in a second, BB gun and box of BBs in hand knowing those birds did not have a chance. The scissor tales saw me coming and decided to dive bomb me causing me to run into the barn where the scissor tales had an ambush set up. These scissor tales were serious about no one bothering them, so I was running, jumping, low crawling, and shooting scissor tales the entire time. Felt like the threat of these birds would be over soon, after all I was a good shot and those scissor tales did not stand a chance.
After 20 minutes of shooting scissor tales, I was hot and worn out and the sky dives by the scissor tales on me had stopped. Took a moment to count the number of dead or injured scissor tales, saw lots of feathers, but no bird bodies! Am guessing they had BB proofed their feathers and had teams of other scissor tales removing the dead and injured from the area while the fight was going on.
Once I was sure the scissor tales were no longer a threat I limped back toward the main house with a bruised foot caused while running and dodging those wild birds. With a happy heart and an empty Daisy BB gun I heard what sounded like lots of scissor tales laughing but decided it was the wind.
Later that day we returned to Aunt Ruthie’s house and again I was bored silly until Aunt Ruthie ask what was wrong. She Smiled and said she had just the the thing for me to do to keep from being bored. My ears perked up till she said clean the back acre, build a base ball field, and play base ball. This idea sounded intriguing but would be a lot of work.
Spent the next two days fixing up the back yard, hauling metal, rocks, boards, wheels, and just junk from the area just so the grass could be cut but on the third day we had a base ball field to play on. Then the storm from hell arrived and it rained for the next two days so we were not able to play base ball on our brand new field since after it stopped raining there was water and mud on the field.
Next time you feel like you are bored and there is nothing to do remember there is always something to do, just not what you wanted to do.
