Yesterday (day
eleven since Joe has been with us) as the day turned into night Joe was very
active and was not showing signs of wanting to take a nap or sleep, but as it
got to be 7:45 PM Ann and I decided it was time for Joe to get some sleep.
Today (June 9,
2016) Ann and I spent quality time with Joe (day twelve since Joe has been with
us) off and on all day and practiced talking with him, made sure he had plenty
of food and water and had fun watching Joe play with a few of his toys.
At mentioned in my
previous notes on the life and times of Joe since he has been with Ann and Me,
Joe seems to have been and still is a cage parrot or at least since we have had
Joe he has been all over the inside of his cage, has come out on his cage door
(we leave the cage door open during the day) and up onto the top of his care.
The first time Joe
came out of his cage since he has been with us was when I reached in his cage
and ask him to step up, he did, and I put him on top of his cage while I
cleaned his cage, water and food bowls.
Since then Joe
comes out of his cage on his own but does not like to get on our hand or
fingers, those attempts other than my first one have ended with Joe trying to
fly across the room (his flight feathers are clipped) and he tends to bounce on
the floor and that is not good.
So far Joe is a
cage bird and Ann and I are going to work on getting him out of his cage more,
in fact we are going to get Joe a larger newer cage to replace his ten year old
black iron cage that is getting a little worse for the wear. We do not want Joe
to have iron issues so we are thinking a new update cage will help with his
training or maybe it will be our training.
Early this morning
about 3:00 AM I had to get up to get a glass of water and as I walked near Joe's cage I noticed a light showing through his cage cover, Joe does not have a
light in his cage so seeing a light concerned me. As I listened to see if Joe
was moving about I did not hear any rustling noises coming from his cage and did
not see any light sources around his cage, this was truly a mystery I needed to
investigate.
As I approached
Joe’s cage very quietly, did not want to wake him, I could see the slit in his
cage cover was ajar just a little so I was able to see even more light coming
from his cage.
Once I was at the
opening to Joe’s cage I was able to peer into the cage and sure enough there
was Joe sitting on his bottom perch with a mini flash light reading a book on
how to train new Parrot Owners!
This was a shock
since I had no idea how Joe smuggled a mini parrot flash light into his cage,
knew he could talk but not read and talk, this was indeed a mystery half
solved, at least the light in his cage was resolved, or was it?
Just then Joe
turned and looked in my direction and said night night, reached over and closed
the cage cover opening with his beak and started laughing, talked about
stunned, then I woke and sat straight up in bed.
It has all been a
dream, talk about having parrot on the mind on our twelfth day of parrot
ownership, but just to make sure, got up and checked on Joe who was sleeping
soundly in his covered cage, there was no light on in his cage.
Whew – more to
follow on the life and times of Joe the Amazon Parrot too follow.
