Joe the Amazon Parrot #5

Ann Busby and I (Bob Busby) have adopted a double yellow headed Amazon Parrot – Story – 5
Today is day four on our adventure into the land of bird ownership with Joe our ten year old Amazon Parrot.
The day started off just like many others since Joe came to live with Ann and Me, I was up about 6:00 AM to greet Joe and change out his water and food and say Hello. Joe greeted me with a new word – Hi and then a new phrase – Poly want a cracker!
Yes, Joe is starting to loosen up and share some of his previously learned words and phrases and even whistled a few notes for me.
While I was having my coffee Joe settled into enjoying his morning dry food and fresh fruit with a water chaser and we both enjoyed the moments together as the sun came up.
After about an hour of human bird bonding Joe decided it was time the rest of his flock came out and joined the morning fun so he let loose with a loud but exciting whistle letting Ann who had been sleeping in the other room know he was ready for her to make an appearance.
While waiting for Ann to join us, Joe and I made Ann a cup of coffee and got her a fresh glass of water with ice and both of us said in unison – Good Morning.
Once Ann joined us all was well with the parrot world and Joe went about his business of playing with his toys and eating a light snack and a few beaks full’s of water.
After an hour or so of flock fun I headed out to the gym to try and get my body moving while Ann spent some quality time with Joe without me. On my return from the gym Joe greeted me with Hello and did a little wing dance for me.
Got myself a cup of coffee and started assembling the acrylic bird cage carrier that came in the mail, one of those snap together affairs. While working on the carrier Joe became interested in what I was doing and came out of his cage, got on top of his cage and watched every move I made with his carrier.
As I was almost finished with assembling the carrier Joe decided I needed help or maybe thought I was taking too long to put his carrier together and said Help and I could have sworn he tossed in the word Need, but for sure he said Help as if he was going to show me how to finish the carrier.
As the carrier was completed Joe again said Poly want a cracker, Ann gave him a cracker but he was not interested, then Ann gave Joe a gluten free saltine cracker I had just purchased at the store and Joe loved it, took it in his beak, then placed it in his left claw and munched on the cracker steadily.
Ann and I were quite pleased with Joe starting to loosen up, come out of his cage on his own, say more words and phrases he has learned over the last ten years as well as trying to speak and say some new words and phrase Ann and I have introduced to him.
As Ann and I were about to leave for a Fibro lunch Joe decided to entertain us with some of his stored up whistling, words like Olay, Hey, Poly, Want a cracker, a very long laugh, some unknown gurgling, an attempt at the Army song I have been trying to teach him, what and Hello.
This was the first time since Joe had been with us that both of us were not here to be with Joe but Joe handled our absence well, when we left he was in his cage playing with his toys. When either Ann or I leave the room Joe will say what as if he were wanting to know where we were going.
On our return from the Fibro lunch Joe greeted Ann and I and our friend Mary with a welcome Hello, fluttered his wings, danced on his perch and tried his best to impress his new flock member Mary with his wing flutters, a few quiet works hard to hear, and ate several nuts while Mary talked to Joe and told Joe how cute he was.
After about thirty minutes of fun and excitement with Ann, Mary and Me, Joe got busy with his toys while Mary got on her way and Ann and I sat down near Joe and watched a little television and read our books while Joe checked us out and just enjoyed being with us.
Ann and I gave Joe some alone time but he let us know he wanted us back in an hour to play – Smiles.
As the day wore on Joe, Ann and I had a good time exchanging words and phrases, not sure who learned more, Joe or US – laughing out loud.
A storm is starting to roll in at 6:45 PM and the sun is on its way to setting and Joe is already yawning but if he stays true to his routine of the last few days he will come out onto his cage door and then get on top of his cage as if to let us know he is not ready for bed, but then yawns an dares us to ask him to go back in his cage.
As the sun sets Joe and Ann are dancing or trying to dance with the song Don’t Go Braking My Heart playing in the back ground, but am thinking Joe is one tired bird tonight and will have problems getting a long nap in his covered cage.

More about Joe the Amazon Parrot to follow – Smiles.
