Joe the Amazon Parrot #52

Today Friday July 8, 2016 started off with a blast of hot air and heat early in the AM but Ann, Joe, and I were nice and cool in our air-conditioned home ready for anything the day had to throw our way.

Sadly as the morning progressed and it was time to get Joe’s cage uncovered and change out Joe’s food, water and of course clean his cage, Joe decided he was not happy with the world or his flock and changed from Sweet Cuddly Joe the Amazon Parrot to Protect my cage from the human invaders Joe the Amazon Parrot.

The last couple of days Joe has been on again off again ill tempered with Me, not with Ann, and I was just chalking that up to him protecting his female from me the male, but it is no fun to be faced off against an upset parrot.

Ann and have had birds before and have read all about bird behavior and have an understanding when not to challenge our parrot but when our parrot gets upset with me for trying to clean his cage and give him food I have to find out what is going on so I can change this aggressive behavior.

Joe has beaked me several times for who know why and then goes back to his cuddly parrot mode but that aggressive behavior seems to be getting to be a daily event.  Reread my parrot books and magazines, check aggressive behavior on line, there are way too many possibilities to know for sure what is upsetting Joe.

Once Joe was settled in and happy and not being aggressive I left to accomplish some chores, Ann stayed with Joe to keep him busy with a parrot training session consisting of talking, singing, listening to the television and radio, reading, the occasional treat and beaks full of water.

When I returned Ann was not a happy parrot owner, apparently Joe had beaked her when she tried to get him to step up, just like he had done to me, and then accidently bruised Ann’s arm trying to get off her hand and back onto his cage! Ann bruises very easily due to all of her ills and medications, and the slightest beak or toe mark will leave a bruise and even draw blood. Ann had been working with Joe after “The Incident” to step up and Joe was again back to his cuddly parrot self, but we are going to have to find out what is going on in the mind of our parrot Joe to cause him to be so aggressive out of the blue.

As mentioned we have read the parrot owners bible and know what signs to look for but lately the signs to look for happen in the process of stepping up and that does not give us time to deal with his aggressive posturing or something like that.

Note, Joe is not proof reading this entry since his side of the story apparently does not match up with the way we see his aggressive behavior.  We are working with our cuddly parrot to keep him cuddly and not aggressive, may have to read more about the “Birdwhisperer”.

Ann and I will continue to work with Joe our Amazon Parrot until we find the magic that allows Joe to feel at home with us all the time and not just every now and then.  After all it has been forty-one days since Joe came to live in the Busby house hold and until this last week Joe has never had any issues with Ann or Me.

Today was the day Joe was scheduled for his avian veterinarian visit but Joe (Ann was worn out from pain issues and not able to go with Joe and Me to the veterinarian and wanted to be there with Joe for the appointment so we had to reschedule) was so upset about beaking out at Ann and later Me (Joe now knows the phrase “No Bite” and we now have our first parrot bites) he was to distraught (Joe was just as shocked as we were when the beak bites happened) to see a veterinarian so we had to reschedule the veterinarian visit for a later date when all three of us felt up to traveling in 105 degree heat.

Apparently none of the Busby flock is dealing with this heat (90 to 100 degree heat that feels like 100 to 110 degree heat) as well as we have in the past years of Florida summers.

Reading up on parrot behavior in an attempt to determine what has Joe our Amazon Parrot so upset so maybe Ann and I can work with Joe to make him feel more comfortable with us as we enter our second month with Joe.

More to follow on the life and times of Joe the double yellow headed Amazon Parrot and his flock Ann and Bob as those moments happen – No parrot or human was harmed in the interaction of Parrot and Humans.
