Joe the
Amazon Parrot #56
Today Monday July 11, 2016 while reading up on parrot behavior
in an attempt to determine why Joe our Amazon Parrot has been so upset and
distracted this past week so maybe Ann and I can work with Joe to make him feel
more comfortable with us as we enter our second month as a parrot and human
family.
Lizette who was Joe’s owner for the last seven years told us
Joe was a ladies parrot and did not have much direct contact with men other
than to see them walk by or clean his cage. Once Joe was in his travel cage and
on his way to our home in the Villages, Florida Joe was not aggressive or loud
and even once he was in his cage at our home Joe was just a friendly cuddly
parrot with Ann and Me.
Ann and I adopted Joe forty four days ago and have enjoyed and
loved Joe each every day and still do, but for the last week Joe has changed
his attitude towards me, there are times Joe does not want to step up on my
finger or hand and has even threatened to bite Me and sadly has bitten me three
times.
Joe still loves and enjoys Ann and Me but seems to want Ann to
do the entire step up action while allowing me to clean his cage, but has
gotten to where he does not want to step up for me at all. There are
exceptions, if Ann is not around Joe will allow me to move him about, and of
course I am Joe’s best buddy if I have a treat, but let Ann enter the room and
I am second on his list to make happy.
We have been trying to get Joe into see an avian veterinarian
(Vet) but it was taking too much time to get his appointment and once we got
the appointment we had to cancel on the day of the appointment due to heat and
heat related ills Ann and I were experiencing. Contacted the vet to reschedule
and it was going to be another three weeks to get him in, so looked around and
found a closer avian vet who could see Joe the next day, so Ann, Joe and I will
be headed to Paws Animal Hospital where they do have an avian vet, Paws is only
three miles from our house.
Last night I found Paws on line, sent them an appointment
request and an email regarding Joe needed
an avian vet, to my surprise I received an email back later saying they
did take care of parrots and would love to see Joe Monday, just call the Paws
office and set up the time for the Monday appointment.
Paws is a new veterinarian clinic in The Villages, Florida
(Open about a year) and is close to where we live, so we are excited about
taking Joe in for his vet visit. Called and set up Joe’s meeting with the avian
vet for today. This afternoon we
will take Joe in for his first ever (as far as I know) parrot physical, get his
toes trimmed, flight wings clipped, and if they offer it, an electronic chip so
we can locate Joe if he is ever lost, parrots do get curious and wander off at
times.
Ann and I left Joe reading up on human interaction with Sesame
Street playing in the background talking about Amazon Parrots while we made our
way to Ann’s pain doctor for Ann to get some pain shots to relieve her pain
level.
After Ann’s pain appointment was over Joe called and let us
know he was having a few of the local parrots over so we could go out for a
late lunch, so we ate at Appleby’s, after lunch was over while walking back to
the car Ann lost all energy in her legs and kind of squatted or slumped to the
pavement with me catching her to help her land safely on the pavement.
It took about five minutes for Ann to get rested enough to get
back to her feet with my assistance and then finish the last five yards to the
car. This was the second time Ann has lost energy like this and we had to
struggle to get her back up, we have both lost energy like this and have been
lucky we were able to recharge and get up, but of course we are both worn out
when such an event happens.
What happened to Ann and Bob Busby the dancers, walkers,
runners, weight lifters, swimmers, rock climbers, travelers, and just all
around get up and go folks?
Once Ann and I returned home Joe had cleaned up after his
Parrot party and all of his parrot friends had left for their own home. When
Ann and I entered the house Joe started his greeting with “Hello” “What ya
doing” and “Well Well”. Once we were all settled in the living room Joe joined
Ann and Me for some word and phrase work along with some intense toy training,
after half an hour Joe felt we were sufficiently trained and fluttered back to
the top of his cage, time to trim his flight feathers.
As mentioned Joe goes to see his first avian vet later today
so all of us will feel good about Joe’s health.
More to follow on the life and times of Joe the yellow double headed
Amazon Parrot and his flock Ann and Bob as those moments happen – No parrot or
human was harmed in the interaction of Parrot and Humans.
